Adult autism assessment

What is autism?

More than one in 100 people are autistic and there are around 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. Autism affects people in different ways. If you are autistic, you might:

  • Find it hard to understand what others are thinking or feeling
  • Feel anxious in social situations
  • Have a specific daily routine and feel anxious or unsettled if there are changes to your routine
  • Have a deep interest in certain activities or topics
  • Have issues with sensory stimulation, such as tastes, textures, smells or sounds that leave you feeling distressed

Autism is present in both women and men but is under-diagnosed in women due to outdated stereotypes about autism. Autism presents differently in women and girls than it does in men and boys, and it is equally important to ensure women and girls receive diagnosis so they can understand themselves and access the right support.

Our team can help you on your journey to understand whether you are autistic.

About your assessment

What happens during the assessment?

A detailed developmental history will be taken using the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADR-1) tool during the assessment and an observational assessment will be carried out using an Autism Diagnostic Observation (ADOS-2). Information from people who knew you as a child will also be gathered during the assessment process. ADHD assessments for adults can be carried out via remote online appointments, which can work best for some patients. If you would prefer an in-person appointment please detail this when filling in the self-referral form and we will be in touch to discuss availability.

Our autism assessment follows the NHS and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. All our assessments are completed by qualified healthcare providers and are likely to be accepted towards an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) if needed.

You will receive a full report with our findings and recommendations within two weeks following your appointment. All our assessments include a feedback session so that you can ask questions and plan for further support if needed.

Do you think that you could be autistic? Fill in our contact form and access support immediately without waiting lists and find out whether a full assessment is the right next step for you.
