Dyslexia assessment service

What is dyslexia?

Around 10 per cent of the population is dyslexic; many of them are undiagnosed. Dyslexia is a neurological condition that can affect reading, writing and processing information in both men and women. If your child is dyslexic, they might:

  • Have difficulty with reading and spelling
  • Struggle with poor concentration
  • Feel excessively tired
  • Confuse left and right or have a poor sense of direction
  • Find personal organisation and timekeeping challenging
  • Have difficulty remembering information
  • Need to have instructions repeated
  • Struggle with sequences such as the days of the week

Our assessments are suitable for all children up to the age of 16 years old. You don’t need a referral from your GP to arrange a dyslexia test for your child with us.

Contact our team via phone or through the online form and access support immediately without waiting lists.

Our assessment includes a comprehensive review of your child’s phonological awareness, processing speed and working memory as well as literacy skills such as comprehension, spelling, reading and handwriting.

They will need a pen, their glasses (if they require them) and a coloured overlay (if they use one). Dyslexia tests for children can be carried out via remote online appointments and the appointment will last for two to three hours.

During your child’s assessment, our specialist does a comprehensive review of their phonological awareness, processing speed and working memory as well as literacy skills such as comprehension, spelling, reading and handwriting.

Our dyslexia assessment follows the NHS and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.

Immediately after your child’s assessment, you will be given an overview of the outcome from the assessment process.

You will then receive a full report with our findings and recommendations within three weeks of their appointment. The report will also include recommendations on eligibility for funding applications, if relevant. All assessments include a feedback session so that you can ask questions and plan for further support.

There are various different screening tests available that can help to give an indication of possible dyslexic difficulties. However, while these screening tests and checklists can be a great help in order to ensure support is put in place quickly, they can’t provide a diagnosis.

Dyslexia can only be formally diagnosed through a diagnostic test carried out by a certified assessor such as HealthCare in Mind, and it is only with a formal diagnosis that a person is able to access support and funding.

Dyslexia is a common and specific learning difficulty, that mainly causes problems with reading, writing and spelling but unlike a learning disability, intelligence isn’t affected.

Without an official diagnosis, children and adults will not be able to access the support they are entitled to which will help them fulfil their work and education commitments. For children and young people in education, an official diagnosis enables them to access different arrangements and adjustments to improve their ability to engage with the school curriculum. This can include things like extra time, a scribe, a reader, assistive software or modified exam papers. For college and university students, they may also be entitled to grants and benefits to support their studies.
